James H. Collier is an Assistant Professor of English, and an Affiliated Faculty Member of Science and Technology in Society, whose work intersects the fields of philosophy, rhetoric, and scientific and technical communication. His current research examines the conduct of academic and intellectual inquiry. A book The Lived Experience of Abstraction: Rhetorical and Philosophical Approaches to Inquiry is forthcoming from Lawrence Erlbaum. He is the second author, with Steve Fuller, of Philosophy, Rhetoric and the End of Knowledge: A New Beginning for Science and Technology Studies (Lawrence Erlbaum, 2004). He is the author and editor of Scientific and Technical Communication: Theory, Practice and Policy (with David Toomey; Sage, 1997). In addition, Professor Collier has authored and edited an expanded, digital edition of Scientific and Technical Communication (2004). He has published articles in, among other journals, Futures, Minerva, Philosophy and Rhetoric, and Technical Communication Quarterly. He is a consulting editor for the journal, Social Epistemology. Course titles of graduate courses he has taught include Knowing in Non-Fiction, Writing in the Disciplines, and The Rhetoric of Science. He has taught undergraduate courses in Managing Knowledge and Information, The Public Intellectual Rhetoric and Scientific and Technological Controversies, Writing and Designing for the World Wide Web, and Science Writing.
