It is my pleasure to welcome you to ASPECT, the Alliance for Social, Political, Ethical, and Cultural Thought. ASPECT is an innovative interdisciplinary and theoretical Ph.D. program located on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. ASPECT fosters a critical engagement between domains of inquiry in the humanities, the social sciences, and the arts.
In addition to offering a one-of-a-kind doctoral program and graduate course of study, ASPECT is proud to serve as an intellectual hub for various activities, endeavors, and events of an interdisciplinary and theoretical nature at Virginia Tech. Among some of the activities developed by ASPECT are: working papers that encourage ASPECT faculty members to present their ongoing research; a book presentation series (in cooperation with the Newman Library and the VT Bookstore) that allows ASPECT faculty authors to showcase their recently published texts; a lecture series that features leading national and international scholars in a variety of fields; an annual mini-conference where ASPECT doctoral students have an opportunity to discuss the theoretical and empirical underpinnings of their work; a student journal—Spectra—that publishes state-of-the-art critical interventions on key events, pressing issues, and important concepts; and many workshops, symposia, and conferences run by faculty and students with the assistance of ASPECT’s core departments (History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Religion and Culture) and the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. To help support these activities and ASPECT students’ research, a “Friends of ASPECT” fund has been created. It is open to receiving gifts and donations (a gift contribution form is available on this website or from the ASPECT office).
ASPECT students and faculty members are critically engaged, eager to ask thought-provoking questions, determined to produce interdisciplinary and rigorous research at the intersection of the humanities, the social sciences, and the arts, and dedicated to the program’s thriving intellectual life. ASPECT is on a steady path of academic excellence. I invite you to explore the various opportunities offered by the ASPECT program at Virginia Tech.
